Burnice "Bernie" C. Black, 79, of Mt. Sterling, died Friday morning, January 11, 2013 at VA Medical Center in Lexington. He was born in Harrodsburg on October 22, 1933 to the late Eunice and Maudolene Wilson Black.
"Bernie" moved to Montgomery County in 1980. He was a United States Air Force Veteran, and a member of Gateway Christian Church. He managed CVS, formerly SuperX, in Mt. Sterling, for 29 years until his retirement in 1995. His favorite color was yellow, he loved to travel, had a passion for gospel music and enjoyed singing in the church choir. He was truly a people person who will be remembered for his mild mannered personality, but mostly his kind heart.
Survivors include; his wife of 30 years, Altha Black of Mt. Sterling; one son, Dan Collins of Winchester; two daughters, Selena Black of Butler and Sandy Romenesko (Kevin) of Mt. Sterling; one sister, Wanda Stump of Tennessee; granddaughter, Ericka Bayne of Lexington and grandson, Doug Sinclair of Kuwait, Iraq, plus six additional grandchildren; great granddaughter, Shelby Sturgill of Mt. Sterling; great grandsons, Jackson Mills and Ashton Eades both of Mt. Sterling, plus eight additional great grandchildren; and a daughter-in-law, Debbie Collins (Harry, deceased) of Troy, Ohio.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death a son, Harry Collins; and two sisters, Carolyn Harmon and Loraine Springate.
Pallbearers: Kevin Romenesko, Dan Collins, Gary Mathes, Tony Lyons, Glenn Potts and Gordon Williams.
Honorary Pallbearers: Les Halsey, Claude Bentley, Jerry Robertson and Joe Clark.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Gateway Christian Church, 801 Winchester Rd., Mt. Sterling, KY 40353; or the VA Medical Center, 1101 Veterans Dr., Lexington, KY 40502.
