Calvin Leroy Nelson peacefully departed this life on March 21, 2026, at the age of 78. Born on May 15, 1947, in Cincinnati, Ohio, to the late James and Lucy Perry Nelson. Calvin led a life rich in service and community, marked by his unwavering dedication to his country as a soldier in the United States Army. A proud disabled veteran, he found honor in serving the nation he loved and became an active participant in the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and the American Legion in Somerset, Kentucky.
Calvin was a man of strong faith, a member of the Baptist community whose beliefs fueled his positivity and jovial spirit. His infectious sense of humor and genuine friendliness enabled him to forge connections with everyone he encountered, exemplifying the adage that he "never met a stranger." His passions were simple yet profound; he loved the serenity of the great outdoors, often spending weekends fishing and camping, relishing every opportunity nature provided.
As a "jack of all trades and master of none," Calvin took joy in learning and sharing a variety of skills. He was a lover of the classics, finding rhythm and joy in the melodies of older music while often reminiscing and sharing stories that brought laughter to those around him.
Calvin leaves behind his dear wife, Regina Hamilton Nelson, whose love and companionship were his greatest treasures; children, Vickie Propst (Brett), April Olsen, and Freeman Nelson; grandchildren, James Propst, Samuel Olsen, Gregory Propst, and Kareasa Propst; siblings, George Nelson, Rosie Beard, and Paul Nelson (Omajean).
In addition to his late parents, Calvin is preceded in death by his siblings, Ted Nelson, Fred Nelson, Dora Newport, Aggie Bohanon, Melvin Nelson, Pearl Richey, Scottie Nelson, Charles Nelson, James Nelson, and Mary Ann Nelson.
In celebration of his life, a memorial service will be held at a later date, with details to be announced.
As we remember Calvin Leroy Nelson, we honor the legacy of a man whose zest for life and love for others will resonate in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him. His jovial spirit and stories will be cherished, and the memories he crafted will continue to inspire. May he rest in peace.
