Calvin Riley Rogers Pinney, 85, passed away on Sunday, August 9, 2026, in Mt. Sterling, Kentucky. Born on April 2, 1941, to the late Calvin and Mabel Sullivan Rogers, Calvin bore the burden of being named after her father, which confused many people during, and even after, her life.

A native of Bloomfield, Kentucky, Calvin was an accomplished pianist. Calvin traveled across the Commonwealth as a teenager, participating in countless concerts and competitions. 

Calvin graduated from Centre College, where she met her future husband, Abbott Brooks Pinney, III. 

Calvin's first job was teaching English at Westport High School in Louisville, Kentucky. She was well-respected by her peers and loved by her students. Despite these achievements, Calvin retired from teaching to devote all her attention to raise her newborn, and only child, John Edward Brooks (J.E.B.), a Sisyphean and thankless task, ending only upon her death.

Calvin, Brooks, and J.E.B. lived in Anchorage, Kentucky, where Calvin was a warm presence in the community. With her trademark humor and kindness, she taught piano to hundreds of local children. She sang in the church choir and belonged to the Garden Club. Calvin served in many local leadership roles: president of the Anchorage Parent Teacher Association; Senior Warden of St. Luke's; and several terms on Anchorage's City Council. 

She lived the last year of her life in Mt. Sterling, surrounded by her family, where she became reacquainted with her Presbyterian roots, attending the First Presbyterian Church almost every Sunday.

Calvin is survived by her son, J.E.B. Pinney (Elizabeth), and her grandchildren, Abbott Catesby Pinney, Woodford Brooks Pinney, and Ada Dorothy Pinney, who will miss her and will carry on her legacy of love, music, and community involvement.

 In addition to her late parents, Calvin is preceded in death by her husband Brooks and brother, John Veach Rogers.

The Memorial and Celebration of Life for Calvin will be at 11:00 a.m. on September 28, 2026, at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Anchorage, Kentucky, with a reception to follow at Owl Creek Country Club.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made in her honor to either St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Anchorage, or First Presbyterian Church, Mt. Sterling.
