Courtney Lykins, Jr.

Courtney Lykins, Jr., 72, of Mt. Sterling, Kentucky gained his angel wings at 3:30AM on Wednesday, December 15, 2021, surrounded by his loving family at his residence.  He was born on May 15, 1949 in Bath County to the union of Courtney Lykins and Josephine Risner Lykins.

Courtney was a Montgomery County native, of the Christian faith and a member of Gateway Christian Church. He was a graduate of Montgomery County High School class of 1967, attended mechanical school in Lexington and worked for Virgil Hall's gas stations, he loved to work on old cars.  Courtney served in the United States Army Reserves for twenty-seven years (1970 - 1997) in the 100th Division, 2nd Batallion, 3rd Brigade.  He was Sergeant First Class/ E7, Senior Drill Sergeant and Senior Tank Commander.  While at Fort Polk, Louisiana in 1970, he trained soldiers heading to Vietnam during the Vietnam War.  Courtney worked at Hobart Manufacturing Company for ten years and then was employed by KU/LGE in Mt. Sterling for thirty-two years until he retired.  He was also a member of the American Legion Post 22 in Mt. Sterling and was commissioned a Kentucky Colonel by the Commonwealth of Kentucky for his accomplishments and service. He loved his grandchildren and they affectionately referred to him as the ATM Pap.  He will be dearly missed by his family and many friends.

Courtney is survived by his devoted wife and best friend; Janet Wilson Lykins, they would have celebrated their forty-eighth wedding anniversary on December 29, 2021; two beloved sons and daughter-in-laws; Chuck and Nancy Lykins of Winchester and Wesley and Allison Lykins of Mt. Sterling; six precious grandchildren; Hannah and Abby of Mt. Sterling,  Bentley, Raylynn, Coleman and Thomas Lykins, of Winchester; two brothers; Ebby Lykins (Shirley) of South Carolina and Jerry Lykins (Kelly) of Morehead; two sisters; Carolyn Bonee of Mt. Sterling and Kathy Smith, also of Mt. Sterling.

In addition to his parents, Courtney was preceded in death by his stepfather; Earl Setters and his brother; Roger Scott Lykins.

Funeral service will be held at 10:00AM on Tuesday, December 21, 2021.   Visitation will be held from 5:00PM - 8:00PM on Monday, December 20, 2021.  Both will be held at Gateway Christian Church, 801 Winchester Road Mt. Sterling, Kentucky. Committal will follow at Machpelah cemetery with Military Rites.  Pastor Bill Kilgore will be officiating.

Pallbearers: Charlie Sparks, Al Botts, Michael Harris, Ronnie Eads, Eugene Fox, Ebby Lykins, Gary Thompson and Andy Barr.

Honorary Pallbearers: Jimmy Wilson, Mike Amburgey, Gary Ballard, Tim Keenan, Greg Barnett, Charlie Hiler, Dirk Pendleton, Cecil Tuttle, Dutch Ishmael, Robbie Toy, Jim Thompson and Lonnie Pendleton.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Courtney's memory to Christian Traditional School at Gateway Christian Church, PO Box 1069, Mt. Sterling, Kentucky 40353 and/or American Legion Post 22, 1091 Winchester Road, Mt. Sterling, Kentucky 40353 and/or to Chuck and Wesley Lykins to assist in payment for their children's college educations.
