Listen to Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Diane Nelson, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and devoted educator, who departed from this world on November 30, 2025, at the age of 88. Born on December 8, 1936, in Princeton, West Virginia, to the late James W.S. Calvert, M.D. and Thelma G. Boone Calvert. Diane lived a life marked by passion, compassion, and a deep commitment to her faith and her students.

Diane attended Asbury University and the University of South Florida, where she cultivated her love for education. For many years, she shared her passion for learning as a math teacher beginning at Lafayette Junior High School and finishing at Zephyrhills Senior High School. Her enduring dedication to her students was highlighted by her receipt of the 1993 Presidential Award for Excellence in Science and Mathematics Teaching, as well as being named Teacher of the Year at Zephyrhills High School in the same year. Diane's ability to connect with her students left a lasting impact on many lives, as she approached teaching not just as a profession but as her true calling.

A lifelong Methodist and devout Christian, Diane was an active member of Winchester First United Methodist Church. She was deeply involved in her church community, participating in the ladies' prayer group and the choir, and always seeking opportunities to spread the message of Jesus. Known for her warmth and kindness, Diane never met a stranger; her concern for those who hadn't yet found their faith resonated throughout her life.

Diane is survived by her son, Jay Nelson (Michelle); her daughter, Nicole Bennett; granddaughters Ashley Vogel (Kevin) and Sydney Bennett; great-granddaughter Avery Vogel; sister Constance Doughman; and many nieces and nephews as they all loved and cared for Aunt Diane. She leaves behind a legacy of love, integrity, generosity, and zeal for life that will be forever cherished by her family and friends.

Diane is proceeded in death by her husband of fifty-two years, Robert Lee Nelson; her parents, James W.S. Calvert, M.D. and Thelma G. Boone Calvert; her brothers, James S. Calvert, and Richard B. Calvert.

A private graveside service will take place at Wilmore Cemetery at a later date.
