Harold Clay Staton

April 24, 1923 — March 1, 2019

Harold Clay Staton, 95, of Mt. Sterling passed into the arms of his loving heavenly father on Friday, March 1st 2019 at Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington, KY.

Harold was born on April 24, 1923 in Mt. Sterling, KY. He was the son of Omar Staton and Gladys Skidmore Staton. Harold was a veteran of World War II, having entered the Army in January 1943. He returned home three years later, in December 1945, to marry his beloved Mae Stockdale. Harold was also a retired businessman, most notably remembered for owning and operating Staton and Wingate Grocery.  Some of his eldest daughter, Betty’s, fondest memories are of “helping Dad in the store.”

Harold was an avid traveler, having visited all 50 states and he was regularly found on Cave Run lake reeling in an elusive Muskie. Harold also shared a passion for photography with his daughter Cathy and grandson David, both “shutter bugs” to this day.  But his greatest love was his wife Mae with whom he shared 73 wonderful years of marriage.

Survivors include his wife, Mae Staton; two daughters, Betty Staton of Mt. Sterling and Cathy (Bill) Calvert of Mt. Sterling; one grandson, David Calvert (Anjuli), and two great-grandchildren, Quinn Mae and William James Calvert of Louisville; one brother, Omar Staton Jr. (Judy) of Versailles KY; one sister-in-law Florence Staton of Cocoa FL; as well as a number of nieces, nephews, and extended family.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, William Pennington Staton, of Mt. Sterling, KY,  Roy Staton of Cape Canaveral, FL, and one sister Orphetta Partridge of Naples, FL.

Services will be conducted on March 6th at 11:00 a.m. at the Mt. Sterling First Church of God with Reverend Bush Stevenson and Reverend Frank Curtis officiating. The Coffman Funeral Home will be caring for the arrangements. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 5th at the church.
