Mount Sterling

Listen to Obituary

Howard Clay "Pecos" Brooks, 87, departed this life on Saturday, April 25, 2026, at Baptist Health in Lexington, Kentucky, following a long illness. He was given the name "Pecos" by his closest childhood friends. He was a longtime resident of Mt. Sterling, Kentucky, and a faithful member of Rolling Hills Church of Christ.

Howard often shared his favorite saying, "Blessed by the best name, Jesus," a phrase he quoted daily. He was retired and enjoyed spending his time fishing, hunting, watching westerns, and talking on the phone. He especially cherished visits with Brother Murphy, as well as cooking-and, of course, eating.

Howard and Barbara Mae Garrett Brooks were married for 44 years. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife; three daughters, Aneidra Brooks-Smith and Tonya Brooks, both of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Aisha Brooks; two stepdaughters, Cartrec Garrett and Elisa Garrett; and one stepson, David Wright, Jr., all of Mt. Sterling, Kentucky. He also leaves behind 19 grandchildren, whom he loved deeply, as well as several great-grandchildren. He is also survived by Barbara Brooks, widow of John Brooks; his brother and sister-in-law, Julian and Elizabeth Piersawl; his brother-in-law, George Garrett; and a host of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Annie Davis Brooks, siblings, Walter Burns, Raymond Burns, David W. Burns, John Brooks, Ann White, and Mary Owens; and brothers-in-law, Claude Garrett and Harry Garrett.

The family of Howard Clay "Pecos" Brooks would like to thank each and every one of you for the acts of kindness shown during our time of bereavement. We would also like to extend our gratitude to the staff of Baptist Health for the love and care they provided, especially the nurses and doctors. May God bless each and every one of you. Your outpouring of love will never be forgotten.

Services will be held at Rolling Church of Christ on Saturday, May 2, 2026. Visitation will be from 10:00AM to 11:00AM. Funeral will be at 11:00AM and the committal service will follow at the Olive Hill Cemetery. Bro. Dan Murphy and Bro. Jerry Carmichael will be officiating.
