It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of James "Jim" W. Johnson III, who left this world peacefully on Saturday, November 1, 2025, at the age of 89. Born on February 20, 1936, in Newport, Kentucky. Jim's life was a beautiful tapestry woven with dedication to education, artistry, and faith.

Jim spent his early years in the heart of Kentucky, where he graduated salutatorian from
Camargo High School in 1954. A true patriot, in 1955, he joined the United States Army, serving in Seattle, Washington, where he honed both his leadership skills and his love for the arts. His educational journey continued with an initial degree in Science Music Business from Eastern Kentucky University in 1962, followed by a Master of Administration from Michigan State University in 1965, and culminating with a Master of Arts in Teaching from Oakland University in 1975.

As a passionate educator, Jim taught for over 34 years in Michigan, after an adventurous year teaching at an Air Force base in Japan for the Department of Defense. He was a beloved mentor and friend to countless students, inspiring them not only through academic subjects but also through music and the arts. His commitment to education was paralleled by his deep involvement in his community and his faith as a member of Ascension Episcopal Church in Mt. Sterling. There, Jim lovingly tended to the church's memorial garden, nurturing both plants and spirits alike.

Beyond his professional life, James was a gifted artist, who excelled in drawing, painting, and singing. He participated actively in local theater, reprising his role in the esteemed "Stephen Foster Story" and performing with the Advent Musical. His love for music continued through participation in community bands, where he both performed and directed with enthusiasm.

Jim's warmth and kindness extended to his hobbies, which included gardening and working out at the Downtown Athletic Club in Mt. Sterling. He cherished these activities, finding joy and solace in nature and fitness.

Jim is survived by his godson, Kevin McCoy; friends, Joyce Lyons and Brooke Lyons Rockrohr (Zachary).

Jim is preceded in death by his parents, Lonnie Johnson, Sr. and Eunice Cooper Johnson; siblings, Lonnie Johnson, Jr., Kenneth Johnson, and Vivian Johnson; friends, Charley Lyons and Christopher Lyons.
