James Steele Smoot

March 3, 1919 — May 28, 2016

James Steele Smoot, 97, of Mt. Sterling, died Saturday morning, May 28, 2016 at Windsor Care Center. He was born March 3, 1919 in Bath County to the late Ed and Mary Steele Smoot.

James moved to Montgomery County seventy years ago from Bath County, he was a retired farmer, a past deacon and a member of Rolling Hills Church of Christ.  He enjoyed attending church, playing and watching baseball and softball and watching UK basketball.  He will be dearly missed by his family, church family and friends.

Survivors include; his wife of fifty-four years, Florence Donaldson Smoot of Mt. Sterling; one son, Gerald Vinson (Betty) of Mt. Sterling; two daughters, Gayle Tipton (Tommy) and Judith Cockrell (Tommy), both of Mt. Sterling; six grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Chester Smoot and Ewell Smoot; three sisters, Stella Honaker, Lottie Mae Honaker and Mary Clay Smoot; three grandchildren, Michelle Renee Cockrell, Angela Vinson Doll and James Matthew Cockrell; his first wife that tragically died in a automobile accident, Mary Virginia Staton Smoot.

Bro. Dan Murphy and Bro. Kevin Jenkins will be officiating.

Pallbearers: Kevin Tipton, Dennie Hawkins, Jamie Compton, Paul Collins, Kendall Vinson, Jason Vinson, Jack Smoot and Clyde Honaker, Jr.

Honorary Pallbearers: Elders of Rolling Hills Church of Christ, Tommy Wills, George David Donaldson, Al Doll and the Great Grandchildren.
