Joe Lewis Greene, a beloved member of the Mt. Sterling community, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, at the age of 90. Born on September 27, 1935, in Mt. Sterling, to the late Lafayette "Lafe" and Sadie Clemons Greene. Joe lived a life that was marked by both perseverance and passion.
As a proud Army veteran, Joe served his country with honor, embodying the values of duty and integrity. His commitment to service extended beyond his military career; he was a devoted member of Evergreen Baptist Church, where he found comfort and camaraderie among his fellow congregants.
Joe spent many years working at A.O. Smith, showcasing his strong work ethic and dedication to his craft. An avid sports enthusiast, Joe dedicated much of his time to coaching Little League baseball and umpiring, sharing his love for the game with young players in the community. He was a stern figure to many, yet those who knew him well understood the gentle giant beneath his exterior. His kindness and encouragement left a lasting impact on countless young athletes.
When not coaching, Joe could often be found enjoying the great outdoors, indulging his passion for fishing, hunting squirrels and rabbits, and sharing stories of his adventures. He also found joy in watching his favorite shows, particularly "Survivor" and classic westerns, which brought him laughter and nostalgia.
Joe is survived by his beloved children, Phyllis Parks, Anita Greene, Jimmy Greene (Brenda), Donald Greene, Marsha Jouett (Charlie), Cortez "Corky" Mason (Stephanie), Steven Greene (Jennifer), and Rainy Clemons; grandchildren, 17; great grandchildren, 14; sister, Carolyn Greene. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched.
In addition to his late parents, Joe is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Carolyn "Pudd" Anderson Greene; son, Ralph Garrett; grandchildren, Bryan Greene and J.C. Walker; siblings, Hank Greene, Clemons Greene, Angela Scott, Thelma Coleman, Betty Johnson, Nora Ferguson, and Phobe Burns.
Funeral services for Joe will be held on Monday, March 2, 2026, at Evergreen Baptist Church, with visitation beginning at 10:00 AM until the time of the service at 12:00 PM. Following the ceremony, Joe will be laid to rest at Machpelah Cemetery with military rites. Reverend Arthur Douthitt will be officiating.
As we gather to celebrate Joe Lewis Greene's remarkable life, we are reminded of his unwavering spirit and the love he had for his family and community. May his memory be a blessing to all who knew him.
