John Phillip "Phil" Murphy

August 3, 1943 — July 23, 2022

John Phillip "Phil" Murphy, 78, of Mt. Sterling, Kentucky passed away Saturday afternoon, July 23, 2022 at his residence, surrounded by his loving family.  He was born in Mt. Sterling, Kentucky on August 3, 1943 to the late Russell " Pop" Henry and Margie Rolph Murphy.

Phil was a Montgomery County native, and a graduate of Morehead State University.  Phil retired after a thirty-five year career with the Commonwealth of Kentucky as a probation and parole supervisor with the Department of Corrections.   Phil loved camping, water skiing, boating, woodworking, mowing, playing a variety of instruments and every car he ever owned but he loved nothing more than his family.  He will be missed by a host of dear friends, his breakfast club, past co-workers and more.  Phil's family will dearly miss him but will cherish the many stories from a life well lived by John Phillip Murphy.

Phil is survived by his devoted wife and best friend of fifty-four years; Anna Carol Murphy; beloved son; Ben Murphy (Michelle) of Morehead; he was affectionately known as Scooby Doo to his two grandchildren he was so very proud of Canon Vice (Laura) and Kenady Vice, both of Morehead; sister; Patty Jackson of Clearwater, Florida; he was known as Uncle Phil by one nephew; Tommy Jackson (Teresa) of Cynthiana; one niece; Jeannette Groeber (Chris) of Belleair Beach, Florida; two great nieces; Catherine and Maggie Groeber; one great nephew; Matt Jackson.

In addition to his parents, Phil was preceded in death by his brother-in-law; Claudie Jackson.

Memorial service will be held at 11:00AM on Thursday, July 28, 2022.  Visitation will be held from 5:00PM - 8:00PM on Wednesday, July 27, 2022.  Both will be held at Gateway Christian Church, Mt. Sterling, Kentucky.  Interment will follow the Memorial service at Machpelah Cemetery.  Pastor Bill Kilgore will be officiating.

Honorary Pallbearers: Mike Haddix, Roger Minnich, Jack Darnell, Jake Hartgrove, Moon Cassidy, Joey Oldfield, Kevin Lee, Bo Queen and the late Jim Webb.
