Born in Hope and died in peace, Russell "Lou" Lewis Wingate, 79, of Mt. Sterling, passed away Friday, April 23, 2021 at his residence surrounded by his family. As a Lifetime resident of Montgomery County, Lou was born in Hope, Kentucky on April 27, 1941 to the late Russell F. and Catherine D. Wingate. He was a long-time member of the First Church of God.
Lou, a graduate of Morehead University, retired from A.O. Smith Manufacturing & Dometic Awning, after many years of dedicated service working in Juarez, Mexico. While residing in Mt. Sterling, Lou served on the Montgomery County Board of Education for 12 years including during the Montgomery County, Trojan and Dubois transition.
In addition, Lou was a member of the rotary club and enjoyed geneological research. His family says, Lou had an astute inquisitive mind and a sharp wit and was a life-long learner of subjects that interested him. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
Lou is survived by his loving wife Betty Sue Hall Wingate; one son; Jeffery Scott Wingate (Jan) of Mt. Sterling; one daughter; Elizabeth Shelley Wingate of Mt. Sterling, and her fiance’ Joe; one brother; D.C. Wingate (Louise) of Charleston, West Virginia; four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Lou was preceded in death by his brother; Linville Wingate and sister; Ina Faye Wingate Toy.
