It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mary Jane Sorrell Johnson, beloved member of the Mt. Sterling community, who departed this life on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, at the age of 84. Born in Mt. Sterling, on October 4, 1941, to the late Emmitt and Nona Thompson Sorrell. Mary dedicated her life to caring for her family and nurturing her community.
Mary embraced life with an infectious joy. As a homemaker, she created a warm and loving environment filled with laughter, love, and countless cherished memories. Her passion for reading and working puzzles reflected her inquisitive spirit, while her love for dancing brought vitality to her days. Mary delighted in traveling and exploring new places, often sharing her adventures with loved ones.
A devoted member of Reid Village Baptist Church, she found solace and strength in her faith, attending services regularly and nurturing connections within her church family.
Mary is survived by her daughters, Sandy Sumpter (Gary) and Debbie Johnson; grandchildren, Jeremy Sumpter, Jessy Sumpter, GiGi Sumpter, and Aisha Johnson-Sanderson; great grandchildren, Lakeyn Barbee and Lucy Sumpter; niece, Vicky Updike Martin (Scott) and Nancy Morton (Steve).
In addition to her parents, Mary is preceded in death by her siblings, Leonard "Pete" Sorrell, Louise Fortune, and Christine Updike.
Mary's warmth and kindness will forever echo in the hearts of those she touched. Her gentle presence and unwavering support will be deeply missed by family and friends alike.
Services to honor Mary will be at a later date.
In this reflective time, let us remember Mary for the love she shared and the lives she enriched through her kindness, laughter, and faith. May she rest in peace.
