Sherrie Lee Barnard

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Sherrie Lee Bates Barnard, who departed from this world peacefully on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, at her residence, at the age of 74. Sherrie was born on December 4, 1951, in Mt. Sterling, to the late Joseph "Joe" and Myrtle Blevins Bates, where she spent her life surrounded by family and the beauty of nature that she so deeply cherished.

A proud resident of Mt. Sterling, Sherrie dedicated much of her professional life to Josten's, where she skillfully shared the joy of class rings with high school graduates across Kentucky alongside her late husband, Jim. Together, they built a legacy of celebration and memories, marking an important rite of passage for many young people.

Sherrie was a devoted member of the Salem Primitive Baptist Church, where her faith and sense of community shone brightly. She was a creative soul, known for her song and poetry writing, as well as her passion for music. Her love for the outdoors manifested through her stunning flower beds, which served as a testament to her nurturing spirit.

A passionate sports enthusiast, Sherrie was an avid fan of UK basketball and football, and she found great joy in following horse racing. She possessed a remarkable knowledge of the sport and enjoyed attending events at Keeneland. Race Days and holidays at Sherrie's home were always celebrated occasions to remember, marked by her culinary skills, decor and her affectionate, welcoming nature.

Sherrie's love knew no bounds, especially for her son, Sean Donohew, who was her pride and joy. She also cherished her roles as a sister and aunt, embracing her family with open arms and a warm heart. Her animals were a source of joy and companionship in her life, adding to the warmth of her home.

Sherrie is survived by her loving son, Sean Donohew; siblings, Stanton Bates (d. Jerri), Bonnie Bennett (Lacy), Martin Bates (d. Loraine), Victoria Beyer (Gary), Brenda Toler (Ron), and Ronada Whitaker (Foy); special friend is Terry Donohew, bonded by their son Sean; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to her late parents, Sherrie is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Jim Barnard; sisters, Carlene Becraft, Shirley Dixon, Lettie Bates, and Barbara Bates.

A visitation will be held in her honor at the First Church of God on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, beginning at 10:00 AM, followed by a funeral service at the same location at 12:00 PM. Sherrie will be laid to rest next to her late husband at the St. Thomas Catholic Cemetery, where family and friends will come together to celebrate her life and the lasting impact she made on all who knew her. Elder Mike Mullins will be officiating.

Sherrie's spirit will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of those she loved. Her legacy of love, creativity, and kindness will always be remembered. Rest in peace, dear Sherrie. You will be dearly missed.
